The hand of Fatima, also called khamsa or hamsa, is a symbol that has been used since Mesopotamia as a symbol of the goddess Ishtar or Inanna. Today, it is above all a symbol of divine protection against evil and is also considered to bring luck. Khamsa is an Arabic word meaning "five" and alludes to the number of fingers on the hand and often an eye is placed in the center of the palm.
